What is URL?

URL, commonly known as "web address", stands for Uniform Resource Locator.

Indicates the location of a resource (such as a web page) on the Internet. URLs also indicate over which protocols this resource will be retrieved. (such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP..)

URL has become a format (text) designed to replace the numbers (IP addresses) computers use to communicate with servers, thus making it human readable.

The "protocol" at the beginning of the URL specifies how the browser should retrieve information about a resource. The web standard is http:// or https:// (s - means secure). Furthermore, mailto: is used to open your default mail client, or ftp: is used to manage file transfers.

http://www.xxxxx.com
https://www.xxxxx.com
mailto:[email protected]
ftp.xxxxx.com

Top-level domain (TLD) can be considered a category for websites. Although .com is the most used, it is .edu for educational sites and .gov for official sites. There are many "TLDs" available, although these are the most well-known.

URLs may also include specific folders and/or subfolders on a particular website, any parameters that can be stored in the URL, or links that allow visitors to navigate to a specific point on the website.
