What is Revenue Per Mille (RPM)?

Online advertising's abbreviation for "Revenue Per 1,000 Impressions" (RPM) is "mille," which in Latin means "one thousand." Compared to CPM, it measures the income from 1,000 ad impressions rather than the cost of the advertisements. Publishers track RPM, whereas advertisers often concentrate on CPM.

RPM is determined using total income and ad impressions. A website with 20,000 page views per day and $300 in daily ad income, for instance, has a page RPM of $15.00.

$30 RPM is equal to $300 income divided by 20,000 page views by 1,000.

A website will earn $50 in advertising income per day if it has 10,000 page views per day and has a $5.00 page RPM.

10,000 page views multiplied by ($5.00/1,000 RPM) equal $50 in income.

Page RPM vs Impression RPM

Page RPM and Impressions RPM are two distinct varieties of RPM. As they are based on page views, the examples above utilize page RPM. Ad unit RPM, also known as impression RPM, gauges an ad unit's earnings per 1,000 impressions. The page RPM and impression RPM will be the same if a website just has one banner ad. Each ad will often have a lower impression RPM than the page RPM if a page includes several ad units, which is frequently the case. A publisher may decide to alter or delete some advertising with the aim of increasing page RPMs if they have low RPMs.

Page RPM vs eCPM

RPM and CPM are sometimes used interchangeably. Although CPM stands for "Cost Per 1,000 Impressions," some advertising networks substitute CPM for RPM in publisher reporting. In particular, "eCPM" or "effective CPM" may be used for "page RPM" on occasion. Yet, "eCPM" in a publisher advertising report denotes the same thing even if "page RPM" is more precise.

Revolutions Per Minute

RPM usually stands for "Revolutions Per Minute" outside of advertising. RPM may refer to the rotational speed of a hard disk or a fan in hardware specifications. Lower seek times are produced by higher HDD speeds, which leads to quicker data access. A desktop computer's 3.5" hard drive typically rotates at 7,200 RPM, whereas portable hard drives often do so at 5,400 RPM. HDDs for top-tier servers spin at 10,000 or even 15,000 RPM.
