What is 3D XPoint?

3d-xpoint is a non-volatile phase change memory and storage technology jointly developed by Intel and Micron. Also known as 3d Cross Point.

Intel uses Optane as its 3D XPoint trademark, Micron uses the name QuantX.

Cheaper and denser than dynamic RAM (DRAM), XPoint costs more than NAND flash. But it is significantly faster while using less power.

In both memory and storage, 3D XPoint has unique properties. Like all RAM chips (DRAM and SRAM), byte is addressable and therefore can be used as main memory or secondary RAM. Because it is non-volatile, it can replace or be used with an SSD or hard drive.
